What's there?
Galeta Point Marine Laboratory was established in 1964. Beginning in 2000, we organized an environmental education program, directed primarily for school children and university students. The guided visit includes the following highlights:
The observatory deck
- Information about the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and the latest research at the Galeta lab.
- A discussion of marine mammals: Whale Skeleton.
- Different types of mangroves found along the Caribbean coast.
- The seagrass bed and coral reefs.
- Aquariums and marine pools where you can learn to identify several marine organisms and their behaviors.
- Telescope terrace for birdwatching.
- Walk through mangrove forest (depending on season).
- Request for special activities will be considered.
The weather at Galeta is dry from December to March, and rains between April and November, during these months, sometimes we also have the uncomfortable situation of having the presence of “chitras” (very small bugs, sometimes called “no-see-ums”)., and for that reason we recommend you come with long pants and shirts, and some kind of repellent. (The repellent can be used after touching the organisms). Bathing in the beach is NOT permitted. We don’t have a restaurant in our area, but you are welcome to bring your picnic and eat while enjoying our fantastic and relaxing view.
