Research Interests

Life histories, behavior, and evolution of tropical insects, especially moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera).

Current Research

Most insect revisions and classifications are based mainly upon characters of the adults. In order to augment that standard data with information on immature stages (egg, larva, pupa), and to seek additional clues to evolutionary relationships, one must study life histories. By raising insects from eggs, larvae, and/or pupae collected in the wild, I've assembled information on at least 1400 Panamanian insect species, mostly moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera), with special attention to certain groups, such as Adelpha butterflies, and skipper butterflies. I photograph the various stages, record larval food plants, make detailed daily notes on behavior (feeding behavior, defenses, molting, etc.) and appearance (form, pattern, color), and mount and label the molted (shed) larval head-capsules and final larval and pupal skins.
