Working on deck

Working on rear platform

The following general safety rules should be followed:

  1. All personnel must wear acceptable life jackets (Type III are provided by ship) at all times while in small boats.
  2. Nobody will go onto the rear deck or fore deck while the ship is underway at night without the knowledge and permission of the Master or Watchperson.
  3. Due to the hazardous nature of wet and moving decks, extra caution is required when boarding boats, using ladders, and moving on outer decks.
  4. Any accident, injury, or fire must be reported immediately to the Master/Watch-person.
  5. When working on deck, work safety-vests (provided by the ship) are to be worn. Hard hats and closed shoes should be worn when swinging the crane or A-frame.
  6. Obtain permission from the deck officer before putting anything over the side of the ship.
  7. Prevent injuries and damage by stowing or lashing all unused gear.
  8. Operating controls, passageways, winches, and fire-fighting equipment must not be blocked or obstructed with stowed gear.
  9. Doors should be closed firmly; never allow a door to swing freely.
  10. Stow toxic solutions carefully. If acids are used, provide buffering compounds. Also provide antidotes for poisonous chemicals.
  11. Scientific equipment or samples are not to be placed in the galley refrigerators or freezers.

All persons in the Scientific Party are urged to read the UNOLS Safety Training Manual and are required to read its "Supplement for Scientists".
