Research info
Galeta Point Marine Laboratory, managed by STRI since the 1960's, is located near the Caribbean entrance of the Panama Canal and the city of Colon, Lat. 9°24'18"N, Long. 79°51'48.5"W. Its scientific value lies in its proximity to fringing coral reefs, sea grass beds and mangrove communities, and its long-term environmental monitoring program.
Extensive environmental monitoring both before and after a major oil spill in 1986 took place at this site.
Researchers working at Galeta have generated more than 250 scientific publications since 1962.
