Director Eldredge Bermingham and all members of the STRI community welcome Ron Herzig, the new deputy director of STRI, who arrived in Panama earlier this month with wife Aileen Heras-Herzig, an endocrinologist, and children Ryan, Sean and Alyssa. Herzig was formerly the business area director of Discovery Sciences at Life Technologies (formerly Invitrogen).

Herzig obtained his Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Molecular and Cellular Biology in 1999. He began his career as a staff scientist in RHeoGene, later taking on senior roles in several biotechnology companies where he focused on the management of financial, operational and personnel resources.

Over the years, Herzig has managed diverse areas of science including marine biology, gene therapy, molecular biology, medical devices and drug discovery. His experience includes human and institutional resource management geared at delivering on organizational goals and expectations, and leading cross-functional teams to provide results within specific timeframes and on budget, as well as communicating those results to diverse audiences. Herzig has been very successful at dentifying scientific directions and translating them into executable plans, as well as obtaining the necessary funding to carry out scientific programs and projects.

According to Herzig, "translating science into organizational objectives and organizational objectives into science are significant challenges" for which he has longstanding experience, and is now committed to bring his experience to work with STRI and SI leadership to further support growth and scientific excellence.

Additionally, he stated that "I am excited to join such a vibrant community and am anxious to meet and work with the staff at all of the sites. In the meantime, when at Tupper, please feel free to visit the sixth floor and introduce yourself."

Bermingham expressed great appreciation "to Bill Wcislo for the passion, understanding and leadership he brought to the Director’s Office during his long tenure as STRI’s Acting Deputy Director. Like Haris Lessios before him, I have been fortunate to have a scientist of Bill’s caliber helping to direct STRI and I am profoundly grateful to both Bill and Haris for their assistance and counsel over the past three years."
